I visited India, the country of my birth and the land of my dreams for the second time this year, during September and October of 2011. In this report, I present my impressions of India. Even though India has made rapid progress during the past decade, it has not reached its full potential and is lagging far behind China, a country with similar characteristics e.g. large population and recent history of backwardness. The reason behind India lagging behind China lies in its rampant corruption and religious superstition.
What is Religion?
Barry Nirmal
Religion is a philosophical system that meets a basic need of the human beings. Religion has no competition in the sense that the needs met by religion cannot be met by any other philosophical system. This is why even though some countries have banned religion for a period of time, it has reappeared after the political system that banned it has eclipsed. For example, under the influence of atheistic Marxism, the USSR was the first state in modern times that banned religion. But after the Soviet system collapsed in December 1991, religion reappeared in Russia and other countries that are the successor states of the USSR. There are many definitions of religion. In fact there are at least as many definitions as there are religions.

For a long time some people have been heard saying that idol worship is wrong, that it is ancient, and not modern and so on. This argument is advanced mainly by the followers of the so-called monotheistic religions with the aim of attacking and slandering Hinduism and it practices. But regrettably it is also given by some confused people like the followers of some Hindu sects. This author has talked to some people who belong to one Hindu sect that opposes idol worship. One day these people will claim not to be Hindus but the next day, when they meet a staunch Hindu, will say, “We too are Hindus.”
